DOWNLOAD THE JENA SIX FLYER! In three formats: JPG PDF PDF (w/text box) Dear Friends: This is the formal call for you and your campus to participate in the National Lawyers Guild Student Day of Outrage in Solidarity with the Jena Six. I encourage you to use the flyers available here. Of course you should feel free to make your own; these are provided to start the ball rolling and bring Guild student actions under one umbrella. Please join the NLG in a demonstration of solidarity by taking whatever actions you possibly can. A brown bag lunch discussion is terribly easy to arrange. Consider giving a call to a local civil rights attorney and asking them to speak – check the Guild referral directory, phone book, or call me at the national NLG office to see if we know of anyone that might be near you and fit the bill. My office number is 212.679.5100 x12. See about coordinating with community groups and other student organizations to make something happen: public interest groups, minority law student associations like BLSA, SALSA, NLLSA, and others, the Equal Justice Society, ACS, etc...! The more groups included, the wider the reach, the larger the impact. If there are several law schools in your city, take advantage: flesh out possibilities for cross-campus collaboration. If you are unsure whether there are Guild students nearby or on the campus across town, check this page on our website, http://www.nlg.org/membership/lawstudents_contacts.php, give me a call, or send me an email. Sometimes there are Guild students on a campus without an official chapter. If this describes your situation, you can still have an impact on September 20th. There are letters that can be written and petitions that can be signed; an armband (take a marker to cloth!) or a flyer (provided here!) can spark a critical conversation; the defense team is always looking for a hand and I can put you in touch with folks who are working with them; and you can check-in with the local or campus Guild chapter nearby to see if there's an activity in which you can participate. If you are stumped, please contact me to discuss organizing and action possibilities for your campus. There are ways to be involved, however small they may seem. Don't feel paralyzed. We are here to call out injustices and do all that we can to make them right. Please try and do your part this September 20th as we support the Six on the day of their community's major action: join me and the National Lawyers Guild as we demand Justice in Jena. In solidarity, Ms. Míchel A. Martinez National Student Organizer 212-679-5100 x12 studentorg at nlg.org |
